Verify your site in Bing and use IndexNow

Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers read Bing's index. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools shows you what Bing sees, and IndexNow tells Bing when a page changes so it recrawls sooner. Both are free.

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools

The fastest path imports sites you already verified in Google Search Console. You need a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account to sign in, and access to the site's Search Console property.

1. Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in.
2. Under Import your sites from GSC, select Import.
3. Sign in to Google with the account that has the Search Console property, and allow Bing to read it.
4. Select the sites to import, then select Import.

Bing verifies each imported site and brings its sitemaps along. There's no file or DNS record to add. If you'd rather not connect Google, choose Add your site manually instead and follow Bing's steps for an XML file, a meta tag, or a DNS record.

What the AI Performance report shows

Once the site is verified, AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing, and some partner AI experiences:

• Citations: how many times an AI answer used one of your pages.
• Cited pages: which pages were cited, and how that changes over time.
• Grounding queries: the searches Copilot ran behind the scenes to find sources for its answers.

The data is summarized. It doesn't show individual answers or the prompts people typed, and it doesn't cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. Mark doesn't read this report yet. Open it in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Tell Bing about changed pages with IndexNow

IndexNow is a shared protocol: one submit reaches Bing and the other search engines that support it. Mark gives each site its own IndexNow key.

1. In the sidebar, select Analysis > Website, then the site. The IndexNow section is below Inspect a URL.
2. Copy the Key. Host a plain text file at the File to host address, https://<your domain>/<key>.txt, containing only the key. Mark doesn't edit your site, so you or your web team add the file.
3. Select Verify key. Mark fetches the file and shows Verified, or what went wrong:
   • "returned HTTP 404": the file isn't at that address yet.
   • "does not contain exactly the key": the file has other text in it.
   • "redirects off": the address redirects to another host. Host the file on the domain itself.
4. Paste changed page URLs into Submit URLs, one per line, then select Submit URLs. Every URL must be on the site's domain, up to 100 at a time.

Last submits lists your 10 most recent submits: when, how many URLs, and IndexNow's answer. HTTP 200 or 202 means IndexNow took the URLs. 202 means it will check your key file first. Anything else shows the reason, such as "IndexNow is rate limiting this host."

Submitting doesn't guarantee Bing indexes a page. It tells Bing the page changed.
