# Tell search engines about changed pages with IndexNow

> Host your site's IndexNow key, verify it in Mark, and submit pages after you publish, change, or delete them.

IndexNow tells search engines that a page changed, so they recrawl it sooner
instead of waiting to find the change on their own. One submit reaches Bing,
Yandex, Seznam, Naver, and Yep. Bing's index also feeds Microsoft Copilot's
answers. Google doesn't use IndexNow. To check a page in Google, see
[Inspect a URL](/inspect-a-url).

Submitting doesn't guarantee a page gets indexed. It tells the search engine
the page changed.

## Check whether your site already submits

Some platforms submit to IndexNow on their own every time you publish:

* Cloudflare, with **Crawler Hints** turned on
* Wix
* WordPress SEO plugins with IndexNow built in, such as Rank Math

If your site uses one, leave it on. You can still set up Mark's key to submit
pages yourself. A site can have more than one IndexNow key.

## Host and verify your key

Mark gives each site its own IndexNow key. To prove you own the site, you
host the key in a file on your domain. Mark can't edit your site, so you or
your web team add the file once.

1. In the sidebar, select **Presence** > **Websites**, then the site, then
the **Indexing** tab. **IndexNow** is below **Inspect a URL**.
2. Copy the **File to host** address. It looks like
   `https://<your domain>/<key>.txt`.
3. Create a plain text file with that name that contains only the **Key**,
with no other text. Put it where that address serves it:
   * **Site built from code** (for example on Vercel or Netlify): add the
file to the folder your site serves from its root, often `public`.
     Deploy the site.
   * **WordPress**: upload the file to the folder that holds `wp-config.php`,
using your host's file manager or SFTP.
   * **Site builders that don't let you add files at the root of your
domain**: you can't host Mark's key. Use the builder's own IndexNow
     support if it has one.
4. Open the **File to host** address in a browser. You should see only the
   key.
5. In Mark, select **Verify key**. Mark fetches the file and shows
   **Verified**, or what went wrong:
   * "returned HTTP 404": the file isn't at that address yet.
   * "does not contain exactly the key": the file has other text in it.
   * "redirects off": the address redirects to another host, for example
from `example.com` to `www.example.com`. Host the file on the domain
itself, or change the site's domain in Mark to the one that serves your
     pages.

Once the key is verified, the key, the file address, and **Verify key** fold
away. Select **Show setup** to see them again, for example to verify again
after moving the file.

## Submit changed pages

Submit a page when you:

* publish a new page
* change a page's content
* delete a page (it should now return "not found")

Don't resubmit pages that haven't changed. IndexNow rate limits sites that
submit the same pages over and over.

1. On the **IndexNow** block, paste the page addresses into **Submit URLs**,
one per line. Every address must be on the site's domain, up to 100 at a
   time.
2. Select **Submit URLs**.

**Last submits** lists your 10 most recent submits: when, how many URLs, and
IndexNow's answer.

* HTTP 200: IndexNow took the URLs.
* HTTP 202: IndexNow took the URLs and will check your key file first.
* HTTP 403: IndexNow couldn't read your key file. Select **Show setup**, then
  **Verify key**.
* HTTP 429: IndexNow is rate limiting this site. Wait before submitting
  again.

## Submit from an AI agent

An AI agent connected to Mark can submit for you with **Submit URLs to
IndexNow** (`submit_urls_to_indexnow`). For example, ask it to submit the
pages you published this week. It checks your key file first and takes up to
100 addresses on one site. See
[Use Mark from AI agents](/use-mark-from-ai-agents) to connect one.
